Original Plan
This game evolved significantly over the course of the game jam.
The original idea was to have a battle royale, where each player would fight over resources (water tanks). If another player was nearby, it would change to the 'king of the hill' format. The battle would gradually shrink to force players together.
After approximately the first week of development, a problem was realised. The map was too big.
Given this is a game jam, it's unlikely there will be a critical mass of players needed to fill the game map. One of the first debugging session, both players spawned on opposite ends of the map. Given a ~10 game length, it would take about 9.5 minutes for the map to shrink enough for the players to even realise another person is present.
By this time, the map has shrunk so far that the game just became a frantic king-of-the-hill fighter.
This is where the game was pivoted to become just that last ~30 seconds of frantic gameplay. The idea of collecting water tanks was abandoned, as there was ample water provided by the edges of the game map to still fit the original theme.
